Week In Review
It was another relatively quiet weekend of racing, although a few of our 3A West schools traveled south to Blacksburg to preview this year's Regional course. The Western boys notched their third big win of the year, using their superior depth up front to edge the perennial state powerhouse Bruins 32-35. Gannon Willcutts was once again dominant, winning by 35 seconds over fellow senior Stutzman as the duo once again staked their claim as the best 1-2 punch in the entire state. A little farther back, freshmen Cyrus Ramazani had without a doubt the race of the week, as his 17:37 personal best sealed the win for the Warriors and vaulted him from outside the poll to the #10 spot. On the girl's side, Coach Doug Bloor's Monticello team continues to quietly impress as they averaged 21:35 on the challenging Blacksburg course to take runner-up honors behind the host school. Armed with a very strong top four since the season's start, the Lady Mustangs have to be thrilled with two huge races from their freshmen Camden Luck (22:13) and Maria Vizcaino (22:14). Two weeks ago at the Adidas Wolfpack Invite in North Carolina, the gap from #4 runner Walz to #6 Luck was a minute, a gap that can doom a team in bigger meets. This week's #4-#6 gap was down to 13 seconds, a very encouraging sign as we head into the season's second half.

In 1989, in an effort to recognize the accomplishments of our talented and hardworking local high school harriers, we approached The Daily Progress with the idea of a weekly poll. Sports Editor Jerry Ratcliffe loved the idea of this community oriented page and wholeheartedly supported it by printing the poll, which is purely based on the weekly votes from our area coaches, along with profile photos of the top runners, every Thursday in the paper. They also kindly include a brief summary of the week’s happenings (written by Alec).
At the conclusion of the season, after the State Meets, The Progress publishes a special page, which includes a big photo of The All-Central Virginia Squad, the final season ending poll (the Top 15 Boys and Girls for that season) and a profile piece on the top area Boy and Girl. We then host a special All-Central Virginia Cross Country awards ceremony, where the top 15 boys and girls are publicly recognized for their accomplishments by their coaches, peers and families for their accomplishments
Coaches from the seventeen “Daily Progress Schools” (see below), are responsible for casting their votes by Monday evening each week. We then tabulate those votes and submit them on Tuesday to be published in the paper on Thursday.
