What’s a Foot…
A Ragged Mountain Monthly Community Update April 2022

-Trackville Talks in person! For the first time, UVa head track Coach Vin Lannana will be hosting Trackville Talks, his monthly community town hall, in person, on Tuesday April 12 at 8:00pm. Vin’s guests will include new UVa head football coach Tony Elliot, who is a big fan of track, UVa’s amazing current crop of speedy milers and former UVa standouts Donal Day (longtime Ragged Mountain friend and UVa Physics Prof) and Mike Pace. Come join us in supporting Coach Vin and his growing program (there will also be a virtual option, if you can’t make it in person).
-Kids T&F Clinic with the Stars! And speaking of our UVa track and field program, Coach Vin and his athletes will be hosting their annual Kid’s T&F clinic on Sunday May 1st at the UVa practice bubble building (down at the UVa Park at 600 Massie Road). Athletes will be hosting different stations to demonstrate different skills from long jump to hurdles, to the kids. Free giveaways and autographs with the athletes will be available. The clinic is free to families with kids ages 3-13 but we ask that you sign up at audrey@raggedmountainrunning.com. Details will be emailed to you.
-The Masters Mile is back! UVa will be hosting two home track meets at beautiful Lannigan Field this spring (4/23 and 5/1) and there will be a Masters Mile for those 40 and over (no time qualifications) at the May 1st event. There will be prizes awarded in the 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+ divisions. To sign up for this free event email alec@raggedmountainrunning.com
-The Charlottesville Ten Miler was a huge success as close to 1500 runners competed in our community’s oldest footrace! Ragged Mountain friends Alex Corbett (50:53) and Thomas Adam (50:56) made it the closest blue ribbon finish in the race’s illustrious 47 year history. Dozens of other Ragged Mountain friends had excellent age group finishes (see below). A big congrats to our friend Nicole Brimer, who, along with her 250 volunteers organized a dandy of a Charlottesville Track Club (CTC) event, with all of the proceeds going to wonderful neighbors like AHIP and the Food Hub.
-Ragged Mountain Runners of the Month…Jen Hochrein (50-54), Jonathan Gardner (50-54), Kendall Tata (60-64), Linda Scandore (70-74), Jessica Palmer (40-44) and Russ Sawyer (70-74), all Ragged Mountain friends who each placed first in their respective age groups at the 10 Miler; Jason Tiezzi (55:01 at 10 Miler); Dan Sutton (78:10), Ian Harrison (2nd in A.G. in 69:17); Bill Palmer (1st Overall Masters in 59:07) and Courtney Smith (1st Overall female Masters 66:05); Philip Lorrish (68:54); Trail Gorman (at 9 years old, the youngest 10 Miler finisher);   Kristen Heinan (4th in AG); Megan McGroddy (4th in AG); Matt (5th in 54:23) and Joy Barresi (73:08); Harry Landers (3rd in his age group at the Tobacco Road Marathon, as he punched his 14th straight ticket to Boston), Scott Apicella (3:09 p.r. at Tobacco Road); Ben Jordan (first ever sub 14 minute two miler); Wes Porter (3:39 for 1500, making him the second fastest Cavalier of all time!); Carter Norbo (57:59), Ali Kelly (58:53) and Cass Girvin (57:26) at Cherry Blossom; Hannah Guyton (AHS-11:42 for 3200 meters).
-Tip of the month: Whether you run or walk for exercise, engaging your upper body (core) will help to keep you in that “nose over toes” stance. This will bring your foot strike under your frame, allowing your arch to absorb more of the shock and keeping you more stable as you shorten your stride strike. For a more detailed explanation of this more efficient way to elak and run, please ask Mark.
-The Dogwood Track Classic, Virginia’s oldest and largest high school track meet, is back and will be held at UVa’s  Lannigan Field on May 6th and 7th.
-Jack Fest was a huge success, as close to 2000 folks came out to Foxfield for this family oriented fundraiser for the UVa Pediatric Oncology Department and our local Ronald MacDonald House!
-And speaking of Foxfield, Ragged Mountain is now selling tickets to the Spring Races (4/26), which will benefit Camp Holiday Trails.
-Upcoming Events: There are no less than a half dozen in person community events over the next several weeks, including the Run/Walk for Autism 5K (4/16), the Clark School 5K (4/30) and the BBBS 5K/10K (5/14). And many of these community fundraising events also have a kids race(s) associated with them. Go to our website for more information on these and other upcoming local events.
-Wednesday Community Group workouts…looking to improve your speed and want some company in doing so? Then come join our weekly workout group any Wednesday morning at 5:30 outside the UVa track. All abilities, ages (we currently have 23 to 73 year olds) and paces are welcome! Email audrey@raggedmountainrunning.com to sign up. And it’s free!
-Our Ragged Walks community group walk had over 50 folks join us for our scenic hike along Montpelier’s beautiful trails last month. This month our Ragged Walks group will be exploring the Ragged Mountain Reservoir path, except this time in the other (clockwise) direction, which will take us across the reservoir dam and a walk across the pontoon bridge. Join us on Sunday April 24 for this wooded walk around the beautiful reservoir. For more details sign up on our website or email audrey@raggedmountainrunning.com
-The CTC’s annual Summer Distance Training Program for those looking to run a fall marathon or half marathon kicks off in May. Mark has served as the coach for this personalized group program for the past 28 years, which is for runners of all abilities, including those who have never run either one of these long distance races. Signups will be available on the CTC site starting in early May.

-The new
foot and bicycle bridge across the Rivanna River has been approved! It will take exercisers from the Woolen Mills complex, at the end of Market Street, across the river to the Old Mill Trail. We’re thrilled!

-Prolyfyk Run Group…Come join this community oriented group for some fun early morning miles in the city!
-XC23 at Panorama Farms next November. We will be looking for volunteers, as UVa will be hosting several thousand visitors for this historic event. Stay tuned for details as we get closer.
-Congrats to longtime Ragged Mountain friend Barbara McMurry on her recent Community Award!
