Hey Everyone,
I’m emailing because you have expressed interest in being trained for the mile this summer. This is going to be fun! I think my dad has given a little background on me but I just finished my 8th year coaching at Albemarle High School. In that time I have coached many milers and have learned a lot from these experiences.
I’m really excited to help you any way I can!
I know my dad and I are working through the logistics of the program but the general plan is to have you do a mile time trial next Saturday to give us a baseline for your fitness and a starting point as you work to progress your time. There will then be four weekends over the following two months where you will race a time trial, which will give you a total of five time trials that you will have raced. The last four time trials will be grouped in pairs, and the two pairs of time trials will be separated by two weeks. As a high school coach, when my athletes have raced on back to back weekends I have felt that they have come back the second weekend more prepared physically and mentally. An example schedule is laid out below. If you would rather race on a day other than Saturday, you can let me know on the Google Form below.
Initial Time Trial:
We are planning on sending out routes that you can run these time trials at or you can run them in lane 3 at the CHS track.
If you’d rather do less time trials or spread them out more, I’m flexible and we can work that into your training plan.
Here’s what I need from you before we can begin:
Once you fill these both out I will send you the training plan to begin to follow next week. Over the past few years, I’ve started coaching a few individuals (usually alumni of Albemarle) and this method has worked the best for me. It really allows me to individualize each training program to the specific athlete.
I’m really excited to help all of you and if you know anyone else that is interested, just forward this along to them! The great thing about being a high school coach is that I have coached an incredibly large range of levels of runners. From boys who can run under 4:20 and girls who are running under 5:00 to boys and girls who are running around 9:00. This sport is amazing and so rewarding because it allows everyone to succeed and improve upon themselves. My favorite quote to share with my athletes is “the only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.”
I know most of you are coming from longer distances, so I know this change will be fun. It will also challenge you in ways that the longer distances might not. The mile is a different kind of tough, physically and mentally, which is why it is so much fun to train for. It is also why it is so much fun to race.
Once again, I’m excited to help you train for this and please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks a bunch!
Adrian

Initial Time Trial:
- June 6th - Time Trial #1
- June 27th - Time Trial #2
- July 4th - Time Trial #3
- July 25th - Time Trial #4
- August 1st - Time Trial #5
We are planning on sending out routes that you can run these time trials at or you can run them in lane 3 at the CHS track.

Here’s what I need from you before we can begin:
- Please fill out this Google Form
- I usually do all my coaching through Google Sheets. If you have a gmail account and are comfortable using it, then that would be great. If that’s not the case, then it’s definitely ok and we can do it through email.
- If you have Google Docs, please make a copy of this training template and fill out what you have done over the past few weeks or so. The more detail the better! In the grey cells, you would enter a number for your mileage for the day. In the white cells you would put any comments or descriptions of your run. Once you have filled it out, please share with [email protected].
- If you do not have Google Docs, please document the last few weeks of training in a way that works for you and email this to me. If you have Microsoft Excel, you can download the template I attached to the email. Please email [email protected]
